Kerala has an amazing range of exotic and colourful South Indian food and drink. Nothing beats sampling the food in Kerala itself, with all the spices picked from the plantations and fish caught fresh from the sea, the blend of aromas and tastes really make an impression.

If you are interested in learning the Malayalam names for certain foods, or general conversation used in restaurants and with buying food then the Beginner Malayalam Food section is a great source of information.

Many people are interested in cooking Indian Food recipes and trying their hand at South Indian cooking. Although many people in the west may think Indian food is generally the same all around the Indian Subcontinent, Keralean cuisine is very different and has many facets to it that are not anywhere else in the country.

Kerala from ancient times have always had very strong links with the spice trade. It is no wonder the greeks, romans, chinese, arabs and many others came to Kerala for all their spice requirements. The foods of Kerala is as diverse as the number of different types of herbs and spices.

Due to the large number of varying curries, it is quite common for all three meals of the day to contain curries.

South Inida is a largely rice growing and eating region. Even though there are numerous types of 'flat breads' made, lunch is almost always rice with several different curries. Even some of the 'flat breads' and desserts made are based on rice.
